Becoming a Member Joining the Credit Union is easy. Once you are within the common bond, i.e. be living or working in the area or be eligible to join through family membership, you can apply for membership. The common bond is an important factor that unites every Credit Union member. It is what every member of a particular Credit Union has in common. If you are unsure whether your particular home address or workplace address falls within our area please contact us to check. To join Meath Street Credit Union Ltd. you need to provide photo ID, such as valid in date passport/driving licence or Garda ID card. If you do not have photo ID you can obtain an ML10 form from your local Garda station. We also require a passport photograph and a recent utility bill within 3 months (gas, electricty or landline telephone bill). Please have your membership form in by 16.30 on a Thursday evening as applications are processed by the committee every Thursday. You will then receive a letter by Wednesday of that week informing you of the committees decision. There is a small entrance fee of €1.27 annual affiliation fee and you must lodge a minimum of €10.00 into your shares and maintain €10.00 at all times to retain membership. Each share equal to €1. After this you should continue to save regularly to build up your own savings and your Credit Union's resources which can then be used to fund loans and other services to members. Remember, every person who saves in the Credit Union is a member and, therefore, an owner. As a member you have a say in how your Credit Union is run. The best way to exercise that right is to attend your credit union's annual general meeting, where you have one vote, no matter how many or how few shares you have. Remember your local Credit Union is operated on a not-for-profit basis and all surpluses are returned to the members in the form of a dividend. |
